The role of the Orphic Mysteries in the foundation of the Western Tradition cannot be overstated. They are the guide, the ritual manual of invocations, and provide the most ancient theurgic incense correspondences. There are many uses of this common name of ‘manna’ but in the Orphic context the reference is to the sweet sap of the Fraxinus ornus or Flower Ash Manna tree. There are many magical associations of this tree with the ash-nymphs and associations with honey and the nourishment of the infant Zeus.

Manna is used for invocations no less than 14 times, sometimes mixed with storax of frankenincese, or alone. These are part of a complex of Aromatic herbs (ἀρώματα) dedicated to the Theoi, the Gods. Apollon; Artemis; Astrapaios Zeus; Eos; Erinyes (+ storax); Genius; Helios (+ frankincense); Hēphaistos (+ frankincense); Hygeia; Liknites Dionysos; Nike; Palaimon; Silenos, Satyros, and the Bacchai; Thalassa; and Thanathos.

While the Orphic hymns use different incenses specifically for Hermes, such as storax and frankincense. It is a vital part of the theurgic and Hermetic Temple as all incenses are under the rulership of Hermes/Mercury as god of magic and messenger. Incenses are messages and offerings, communications of prayer, intention, silent communion with the Theoi and planetary Gods (although to the highest of THEOS no incense is to be used, nor words, but silent gratitude and contemplation).

Incenses are necessary in the generation phases of theurgic rites, exalting the senses, saturating the atmosphere, infusing the rites and temple with the aura of the Gods. They are a subtle form that ‘feed’ the statues and draw down the celestial powers and the scatter the parasitic entities that seek to exploit the magicians vulnerability through use of visionary elixirs. The incenses are a weapon in the arsenal of these malovent forces and a guide and comfort to the visionary invocations and entheogenic quests. Incense can recalibrate the experience from drifts into infernal or inhospitable realms, visions and entities.
